What is YaTab?
Not all extensions are equal. Some are beneficial and reliable. Others are useless and can be even malicious. YaTab falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. This extension does offer seemingly useful services, but it also acts as a browser hijacker that takes over the browser and redirects all search queries to a third-party engine. In the past, Ask.com was the engine of choice; however, Anti-Spyware-101.com researchers have found that it currently redirects to Google Search. Can the results be trusted? They were not modified during our research, but we cannot guarantee that that is what you will face also. In general, if you were not informed that your searches would be redirected, changed, or messed with in any manner, trusting the search service is not a good idea. How does YaTab work?
YaTab is compatible with the Google Chrome web browser only, and so it is no wonder it is offered at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/yatab/fkkfdilehekamhmocmkicmebbhcanobi. The installer on the Chrome web store informs that the extension can access bookmarks and browsing history, and even change things around. Furthermore, it is suggested that the hijacker can modify the search settings and take over the New Tab. It is also revealed that the content on websites you visit can be changed too. All of this is extremely strange, and most users turn around and drop the idea of installing the extension at all. Of course, if you are careless when installing YaTab from the Chrome web store or https://yatab.net, or you are not cautious when executing a software bundle that presents the extension, you might be oblivious to these privileges that the hijacker wants. Speaking of software bundles, if you used them to let in the extension, immediately scan your operating system to check if you need to delete other threats that might have been installed along with it. Of course, even if the hijacker is the only threat that exists, you still should not postpone the removal.
Once installed, YaTab takes over the New Tab to introduce users to a window representing different tools. These include Weather, To-Do, and Notes. If you click the Weather button, you are shown a recent weather forecast. If you click the other two, you are enabled to created to-do lists and notes. The window also displays easy access links to Chrome’s bookmarks list and the browsing history. In the center, you can find a search field, and, as we discussed already, it redirects to Google Search. To make the hijacker seem more appealing, a feature that allows changing background images is added. Of course, this does not make the hijacker any more reliable. YaTab can record information and it also can display third-party advertisements, surveys, and contests. Overall, even though it is not entirely useless, it certainly cannot be identified as a trustworthy service, which is why removal is recommended. The good news is that deleting this browser hijacker should be easy.
How to delete YaTab
