What is Worm.Bondat?
Worm.Bondat is a malicious computer infection that spreads through infected USB flash drives. This means that you need to scan your external devices before you open it automatically. Unlike Trojans and other computer infections, Worm.Bondat can easily replicate itself to spread to other systems. It is important to intercept and remove Worm.Bondat as soon as possible because the infection may communicate with the command and control (C&C) server to download updates and other malware onto your system. In short, Worm.Bondat is a dangerous security threat that should be exterminated immediately.
Where does Worm.Bondat come from?
As mentioned above, Worm.Bondat gets distributed through removable storage devices. It can copy itself and store those copies in a random file on your USB or other external device. It means that when you plug your device into an infected computer, Worm.Bondat detects the device and then automatically transfers itself into the device, affecting various files that are already stored there.
If Worm.Bondat encounters files that have .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf, .txt, .mp3, .ogg, and many other common extensions, it creates .lnk extension files with the same file name, and then all the recently created files are moved to the same directory where the main infection file is located. Clicking any of the .lnk files would automatically link the user to the malicious javascript file that loads the Worm.Bondat infection.
What does Worm.Bondat do?
Technically, worms do not intend to corrupt or modify files on the affected computer. This is actually what genuine computer viruses usually do. Worms, on the other hand, mostly cause some harm to the network by consuming your bandwidth and Worm.Bondat is no exception.
When Worm.Bondat enters a target computer it deletes specific files from the startup. The file extensions affected by this worm include .exe (binary files), .js (javascript), .vbe (VBScript Encoded Script File), and many other commonly used administration tools’ processes. It should also be pointed out that Worm.Bondat can terminate some antivirus programs as well. What’s more, Worm.Bondat is also known to collect information from the compromised computer and send it over to a remote server. This information includes your user name, computer name, operating system version, and language settings.
Thankfully, Worm.Bondat does not hide itself from the user because when the worm kills some of the most common processes; it displays this fake warning message:
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xef3814 (15677460), Thread id=0xef98e1 (15702241).
Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.
If you see this message on your computer’s screen, then it is obvious that you have been infected with Worm.Bondat and you must do everything in your power to delete this worm.
How do I remove Worm.Bondat?
Worms are not adware programs or browser hijackers, so manual Worm.Bondat removal is extremely complicated and only computer users with advanced programming skills should attempt that. On the other hand, you can remove Worm.Bondat with a licensed antispyware tool. Invest in a reliable computer security application and run a full system scan to detect all the malicious files and programs. Chances are Worm.Bondat is not the only dangerous infection on-board.
