Wind Browser

What is Wind Browser?

There are more and more Chromium-based browsers popping up everywhere, and Wind Browser is one of the newer discoveries. This suspicious browser is not that much different from Unico Browser, Tesla Browser, and other infamous browsers that all try to mimic Google Chrome. In some cases, these web browsers even replace Chrome as the default browser and remove its shortcuts. We have found this program to set itself as the default browser, and this is not the only reason why it is suspicious. For example, the way this software uses tracking cookies is not explained fully in the Terms of Use document (Пользовательское соглашение). If you believe it, the data collected does not include personally-identifiable information, which is good news. Unfortunately, that does not make this browser much less suspicious. The suspicious WindBrowser is targeted at users living in Russia, and that becomes obvious when you visit windbrowser.net where information about the browsers is presented in Russian only. What is more, this strange browser comes with a Russian extension pre-installed, called “Советник Теслы” (Sovetnik Tesla). The ID of this extension is goalojoobcfkhddpbjcmhdceeegmaphh (possibly could change), and you can type this name into your computer’s Search to find the folder that stores its files. You should be able to find this folder under C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Local\Wind\User Data\default\Extensions. We do not guarantee that this extension will be eliminated if you remove the files within this folder. However, if you delete it using the guide below, you should get rid of it completely. This extension is quite suspicious because it promises to show better prices. This is suspicious because it means that ads might be shown to you, and, considering that Wind Browser promises to block ads, this is strange.

DevUnion Inc. is the publisher of this strange browser, and it is associated with AD Solution Media Associates LLP. It is possible that Wind Browser was primarily created to show advertisements despite the fact that it also installs an AdBlock extension (gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom) that is meant to stop unreliable, undesirable, and annoying ads from showing up. According to our research, this browser is likely to show advertisements on Russian shopping sites, and we recommend ignoring these ads. The fact that ads show up despite the existence of an ad-blocker should signal you that this program is unreliable. This is one of the few reasons why we classify it as a PUP (potentially unwanted program). Another reason behind this classification is that it can come bundled with third-party software, and you might install it without fully understanding it. Do you believe that malware was installed along with Wind Browser? If this is your suspicion, use a malware scanner to make sure that you do not miss any threats.

Advertisement-supported programs, PUPs, hijackers, and similar programs are often bundled together. Unfortunately, this tendency suggests that Wind Browser might have been infiltrated along with malicious programs, and their removal is extremely important. This is one of the reasons why we advise the automatic removal option over the manual removal option. Install anti-malware software to have all existing threats eliminated from your operating system simultaneously. You also need to consider installing this software if further protection of your Windows system is important to you. If you use up-to-date anti-malware software, you will not need to worry about other infections attacking your operating system in the future, and this will decrease the number of security issues that you are likely to encounter.

When uninstalling the PUP via Control Panel, make sure you mark boxes indicating that you want to delete browsing data, as well as to change the default browser. Although you should see no leftovers after you perform these steps, you still should run a malware scanner to make sure that you are aware of all threats. If you decide to remove one component at a time, you have to be very careful with the removal of registry keys. Make sure you are deleting the keys associated with the browser and not some other program entitled “Wind.” Use the comments box below to ask us your questions if you have any.
