What is Videodrome Search?
Videodrome Search is a new browser extension that we put under our microscope and found that it may not be as useful and reliable as it may want you to believe. In fact, our malware specialists at anti-spyware-101.com say that this is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that might cause indirect system security issues. This PUP installs a questionable search engine page, for instance, that may show you potentially unreliable search results containing third-party ads and links from questionable sources. If you want to have access to free online movies and reviews, we believe that there are more secure ways to have them available in your browsers. For example, you can use the bookmarking function of your browsers to have a reputable website one click away on your bookmarks bar. Since it is also possible that this PUP enters your computer in a free software bundle, it is quite likely that you will find more serious threats on board as well. Therefore, we advise you to remove Videodrome Search from your computer and make sure that you take care of all other threats, too. Before we tell you how you can eliminate this PUP, we would like to share what we have found out about this questionable extension.
Where does Videodrome Search come from?
You can find the developers websites at gomovix.com where you can download a mobile app and another PUP called goMovix Start, too. You are actually redirected to the Chrome web store page of this other extension that you can see at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gomovix-start/nngdfnnnkccipoglcgppagpgjkkbfclo. As you can see, there is no way for you to download or install this PUP from its own website somehow. Instead, you can do so by visiting chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/videodrome-search/fhleklgbemkknafahmcdmkmkebmgbpai. On this web store page, you can see that this useless browser extension is actually "offered by" bettersearchtools.com and not its real developers. This is quite strange, considering that when you visit this site, you do not find any reference to this PUP. In any case, we do find these circumstances a bit suspicious even though we understand that it may not be enough for you to want to delete Videodrome Search.
What is even more worrisome is the fact that we have found this PUP spreading on the web in free software bundles. No wonder why you may not remember installing it. It is possible that you are looking for a free program to download and you end up on a shady file-sharing page. When you use such a source for downloading files, you need to be prepared because most likely you will download a bundle of programs. The problem is that these programs may well be malware infections and not only PUPs. Such a bundle can easily contain adware programs, browser hijackers, Trojans, backdoors, and more. If you want to avoid such multiple threats, you should stay away from such sites and you should also stop clicking on third-party ads (download offer pop-ups, banners, and the like). It is important that you keep your system clean of potentially harmful programs and infections as well since they can cause further infections and more system security-related issues for you. We suggest that you delete Videodrome Search and scan your computer with a trustworthy malware scanner to find all other threat sources.
How does Videodrome Search work?
When you install this useless extension, it displays a green button with a magnifying glass on a film roll in the top-right corner of your browser. If you click on this button, a small window pops up with a search field and basic film category thumbnails. This PUP also installs a new default search engine, movix.searchalgo.com, which is one that you should not trust 100%. Our tests show that this search engine may expose you to questionable content by manipulating the results. Although your search queries are redirected to a Yahoo search results page, it does not mean that all contents are reliable. This is a trick that the authors of such PUPs and browser hijackers usually apply, i.e., the deception of unsuspecting users by showing them results from reputable search engines like Google and Yahoo. However, if cyber criminals manage to exploit this PUP, it is quite possible that they will promote their malicious websites through third-party ads and sponsored links. If you click on such content, you could infect your machine with more serious threats. But you may also become a victim of online scam and share your banking details with crooks who could steal your money as a consequence. Though these are just potential indirect threats relating to this PUP, we still recommend that you remove Videodrome Search from your browser.
How do I delete Videodrome Search?
Since this is a browser extension that only works under Google Chrome, you only need to remove this extension to eliminate the potential threats. It is possible that you are not familiar with the necessary steps so we have prepared the instructions for you that should make it quite straightforward for you what to do. Please do not forget about the possibility that there could be other infections on your system that may be more serious than this one. If you want to use a secure computer, it is imperative that you clean all the potential and malicious threats from your system possibly in one go. If you cannot do this alone, single-handedly, we advise you to employ a professional anti-malware program like SpyHunter. When updated regularly, such security software can automatically identify and stop all existing malware infections and PUPs. It is also advisable that you update your programs and drivers on a regular basis too, which can help keeping cyber criminals away from gaining easy access to your system and your files.
