What is Tank Runner?
Tank Runner is a potentially unwanted program targeted at Google Chrome users. Our researchers say it could come as a redirect if you click possibly malicious pop-up ads or visit unreliable web pages. Yet the worst part is the fact the extension might be forced on you. To be more precise, the application’s official website could go full screen and display a notification insisting you install the add-on before leaving the site. Naturally, some users may add it while thinking they have no other choice. If the situation is familiar to you, we urge you to read the rest of the text and learn about the potentially unwanted program so you would know what to do if you come across something similar the next time. Plus, both in the text and the deletion instructions located below the article we will explain how to eliminate Tank Runner if you wish to get rid of it.
Where does Tank Runner come from?
Our researchers confirm Tank Runner might come as a redirect through an adware server available via the following link: onclickrev.com/afu.php?zoneid=1407888&var=1407888. Apparently, the user should be redirected to a website called zjsbsj.com/ins/?id where he should see a pop-up window asking to “Add the Extension to Chrome by clicking the “ADD TO CHROME” button.” During this, it was reported the user’s browser might be made to go to full-screen mode; possibly, to prevent the user from exiting the site without adding the “recommended extension.” As you see the pop-up message may not name the application, although the tab it is opened on might be called Tank Runner.
However, the strangest part is the description placed below the notification says the extension can allow the user to search the Internet without being tracked, but the software’s description, which was available via Chrome Web Store Page (before the add-on was removed from it) said the application was a game one could play by building a team of friends. The link (zjsbsj.com) to the add-on’s website was the same one the user would end up if he received the potentially unwanted program as a redirect, so it is difficult to say why the mentioned descriptions were this different. In any case, it only makes us suspect the application cannot be trusted even more.
How does Tank Runner work?
Like we said earlier the extension works only on Google Chrome browsers. Once added it might place an icon on the browser’s top-right corner. Clicking the icon could either open a window with a game that may go by a similar name or it could open a particular search engine; it might depend on which version of it you receive of how you install the tool. According to our researchers at Anti-spyware-101.com, it is entirely possible the potentially unwanted program could also gather information about the user’s browsing habits, for example, entered web pages, clicked ads, time spent on particular site, search keywords, and so on.
Since at the moment of writing Tank Runner is no longer available on Chrome Web Store page or its official site (zjsbsj.com), we cannot know for certain for what purpose the tool could be gathering user’s data. Nonetheless, based on our experience with similar applications we could mention that such potentially unwanted programs or other suspicious software alike often record users' data to provide them with targeted ads. At this point, it is important to mention that if the ads come from unknown third-party partners there might be no reassurances such content can be trusted and so the user should be extra careful if he does not wish to end on possibly malicious web pages.
How to eliminate Tank Runner?
If you just got redirected to a site asking to install the extension and you do not wish to do so, you should exit the full-screen mode by pressing the F11 button. Then you should try to close the tab with the suspicious link or the whole browser several times. If it does not work, open your Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and kill the browser's process. As for users who installed Tank Runner we would advise following the instructions located below; they will show how to access Google Chrome’s Extensions menu. Of course, if the task seems too difficult or you wish to complete a full system scan and remove other possible threats too we would recommend installing a legitimate antimalware tool instead.
