What is Spinyon?
Google Chrome users might install Spinyon, an extension that is meant to optimize search results by Yahoo Search. What does that mean? You might think that the extension promises to enhance the results you see and include more interesting and useful links. In reality, the extension is most likely to include sponsored links and advertisements only. This is the main reason this add-on is classified as a potentially unwanted program, or PUP. As you might know already, our Anti-Spyware-101.com team recommends removing all PUPs, and you can learn how to get rid of this particular PUP using the guide in our article. If you scroll down, you will find a section called “How to delete Spinyon,” and further down, you will find a step-by-step guide. If you are not interested in learning more about the extension, scroll down. If you are curious about the extension, continue reading, and use the comments section to ask questions if you want to.
How does Spinyon work?
Spinyon is a clone of GalaxySpin, SearchZilla, and many other potentially unwanted programs, all of which were unleashed by webcoapps. We know that because the description on the Chrome Web Store installer page (chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/spinyon/ckcmjkakmgfccahbhniegnfaefljbpll) links to the Privacy Policy at webcoapps.com/privacy.html. According to this document, the creator of the PUP reserves the right to collect information about users and their interaction with ads as well as share the collected data with other parties. That is pretty much how most virtual services work, but that does not mean that you can trust them equally. When you think about it, what do you really know about webcoapps? Most likely, you know nothing, and you certainly do not know who could use the potentially unwanted program to gather information or place advertisements. This poses a risk that you could, potentially, face very unreliable parties, and that is exactly why you need to consider removing Spinyon from your browser. If you downloaded this PUP using a bundled downloader, you might also need to delete other threats.
Once Spinyon is installed, feed.spinyon.com/?q gets set as the default search provider. The interface of this search tool looks completely normal. In fact, some people might find the clean interface very appealing, and the included tools (file/currency/cryptocurrency converter and calculator) might be attractive too. So, is Spinyon worth the risk? That is the real question. If you want to be able to convert files or currency directly from your browser, we suggest finding reliable websites that offer such services and bookmarking them for easy access. If you enjoy Yahoo Search, you also could set it as your default search provider or homepage. As for the PUP, we strongly recommend deleting it because even though it might look harmless and even helpful, it can track your activity, record your browsing history, share data with unknown parties, and also help them promote their offers via the search engine, to which you get redirected.
How to delete Spinyon
Have you attempted to remove Spinyon already? Most likely, you have not because there really is nothing to it. All you have to do is find the right entry in the chrome://extensions menu and click the ‘Remove’ button. Of course, if you have never taken such actions before, you might be confused. This is exactly why we have created a guide that will help you along the way. Once you delete Spinyon, it is a good idea to clear browsing data as well, and this process is presented in the guide below too. By clearing browsing data, you will ensure that data-trackers employed by the PUP are no longer spying on you. This is only one option. It is much better to install anti-malware software that was built to erase threats and PUPs from systems automatically if the suspicious extension is not the only thing causing you a headache. If you suspect that other threats exist, but you are not completely sure yet, install a trusted malware scanner to clear the air.
