What is Speed Test Guide?
Did you download Speed Test Guide? If you did, you might have not researched it enough, and you might not know that it is identified as a PUP (potentially unwanted program). A PUP is a program or an add-on that does not offer greatly beneficial services and that works in a suspicious way. The most suspicious thing about this particular extension is the search service it provides, and we are discussing this further in the report. If you are already ready to delete Speed Test Guide, check out the guide below, but if you are not yet sure if you want or even should remove this PUP from your Google Chrome browser, you might want to continue reading the report. Before you commence, we advise scanning your system with a trusted malware scanner to make sure that there are no other threats to worry about. Also, as always, Anti-Spyware-101.com researchers are ready to answer your questions about the PUP and its elimination, and you can post them in the comments section below.
How does Speed Test Guide work?
Google Chrome users usually download extensions from the Chrome web store, and you can find the installer of Speed Test Guide at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/speed-test-guide/jkilbiahalnlmbdplofomffbdlomfopi. The official website presenting the PUP is speedtest-guide.com. Did you download the PUP from either of these sources? If you have not, it is likely that the extension was introduced to you via a third-party downloader. Was the PUP bundled with other programs or add-ons? If it was, you need to inspect your operating system immediately, if you have not done that yet. Hopefully, dangerous threats do not exist, but if they do, you should not wait to delete them. While our research team advises removing Speed Test Guide itself, it is not a critically dangerous threat, and so it can wait. So, what are the reasons to delete this extension? First of all, you have to think if this PUP is really that useful. There are plenty of internet speed testing tools online, and you can use them without downloading anything. Also, it appears that the PUP itself is simply promoting speedtest.net, which, of course, you can access even if you do not download the extension.
What is most disconcerting is that Speed Test Guide introduces speedtest-guide.com/newtab/v1/1wqzj2.html as the new tab page, and the search tool represented via it cannot be trusted. Unfortunately, the users of this PUP might not realize that because they area redirected to Yahoo Search (search.yahoo.com). Needless to say, if you use this search engine on a daily basis, you might think that using it is completely safe. Well, the results are modified, and due to this, we recommend removing Speed Test Guide. The modified results could be unreliable if the associated advertisers decided to use the platform to display unreliable links. Considering that the main service offered by the PUP is not exactly useful, we do not think that many users would choose to take risks for it. Obviously, if you are not comfortable with the PUP, we recommend getting rid of it.
