Our cyber security experts have recently tested a program called ShutdownTime because it was reported as suspicious. They have found that this program features an adware component designed to show advertisements while you browse the web. For this reason, our experts classified it as a potentially unwanted program and suggest that you remove it because the ads are annoying and invasive. What does ShutdownTime do?

ShutdownTime is promoted as a program that can let you shut down your PC automatically at a particular time. It has a simple small user interface window that lets you choose either to restart or shut down your PC. You can set the time and date when you want that to happen. Initial testing has shown that this application performs this function well. Therefore, it could be considered useful if it were not for the fact that it secretly installs an adware component. Testing has shown that the component is not removed even after you uninstall ShutdownTime.

According to our researchers, the adware component is a separate executable or even several executable files that can be placed in the main directory of ShutdownTime at C:\Program Files (x86)\ShutdownTime or in a subfolder at the same location. The executables can be named randomly. Testing has shown that it can generate names such as 9EZSFR7JLDTF7GI.exe, CNDBA.exe, and M4IS7KPXV.exe. However, in your particular case, the name of the executable can be different. This malicious executable was designed to load promoted websites while you browse the web. The adware can open the promoted sites in a new browser window or a new tab. The ads can be region-specific because researchers think that it should obtain your IP address and, thus, your approximate location.

Where does ShutdownTime come from?

This application was created by a shady company called WeMonetize that is also responsible for releasing DiskPower and Speedownloader. These two programs are very similar, so this program’s developers use the same platform to create new applications. ShutdownTime has a dedicated promotional and distribution website at “Shutdowntime.com.” This website features a download button which does not work because it redirects to “Twitter.com/SBootstrap” which is an unrelated Twitter thread. Nevertheless, researchers have found that this application is being disseminated using software bundles. They say that its developers have probably made arrangements with freeware distributing sites to have it included in bundled freeware installers that. It is possible that the installers were configured to install ShutdownTime on your PC by stealth, but it is also possible that they will allow you to opt out.
