Searchsio is an extension that promises to offer the “best way to search,” but our researchers at Anti-Spyware-101.com warn that it is not as innocent as it might appear to be at first. For one, it does not actually offer a reliable search service, and since that is the only service that is should provide, it loses its credibility. Our researchers have classified the extension as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) for this very reason. How does Searchsio work?
Searchsio is introduced at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/searchsio/blmfnanbhmeikmkjgielnmeemifbgcia and searchsio.com, and the creator of this potentially unwanted program is webcoapps. Our research team is not familiar with this company, but it is possible that a different company has rebranded itself. Or perhaps we are dealing with an entirely new PUP creator. Whatever the case might be, Searchsio is not to be trusted because when it installs, the default search provider on Google Chrome is switched to feed.searchsio.com. The biggest problem is that the keyword queries are redirected to Yahoo Search via this engine, and because the results are modified, they cannot be trusted. However, because the results are delivered using a well-known search engine, users of the PUP might not even realize that they are dealing with something questionable. Of course, the injected results could be quite attractive because the PUP is able record browsing history and use it to personalize your search experience. As the Privacy Policy at webcoapps.com/privacy.html informs, the PUP collects data to “Recommend content based on your preferences.”
The Privacy Policy also informs that some information can be shared with third parties to improve a service. However, we are not informed what kinds of parties these are. Do you really think that you can trust whoever is associated with a search tool that simply redirects to another search engine to introduce you to search results? Obviously, you have to think very carefully what programs you install and trust, and note that it is not enough to read an official description to understand a program, an extension, or a service fully.
