What is MyPoints Score?
MyPoints Score is a program that is supposed to give you alerts on point-earning opportunities while you browse on its partner sites and provide discount coupons. We recommend removing this program because it is nothing more than an adware-type application. In actuality, MyPoints Score can show you questionable misleading advertisements that will not help you save money or improve your online shopping experience. Hence, this program was created for generating advertising revenue. However, there is more to this program than you think, so we invite you to read this description that is based on the research provided by our malware analysts.
Where does MyPoints Score come from?
This adware program comes from a San Francisco-based company that calls itself MyPoints.com, Inc. This company has been in business since late 2011 and since then it has been the subject of numerous complaints. According to various sources, this company has received approximately 230 complaints within the last three years. We believe that these numbers are indicative of how unreliable MyPoints Score can be. Nevertheless, its developers use legitimate and deceptive (yet still legal by law) means to distribute this application.
Chrome users will be surprised to know that you can download this unreliable adware program (the 3.0.6 version) from the Chrome Web Store. However, Firefox’s counterpart store does not have it. Nevertheless, the 1.31.153.0 version known to be compatible with all three major browsers can be downloaded on freeware distributing websites such as Software.informer.com. And, of course, this program can be found bundled with legitimate software, though its presence on a software bundle may not by stated openly for obvious reasons. If you want to remove MyPoints Score from the installation process, you should opt for “custom” installation settings and uncheck its respective checkbox.
How does MyPoints Score work?
Our malware researchers have found that MyPoints Score has, at least, three different versions. The most commonly found version is 1.31.153.0. The other two are 2.1 and 3.0.6. Depending on the version the files that compose this program differ in number, size, and name. For example, the most popular 1.31.153.0 version contains thirteen files that include: MyPoints Score-bg.exe, MyPoints Score-bho.dll, MyPoints Score-bho64.dll, MyPoints Score-buttonutil.exe, MyPoints Score-buttonutil64.exe, MyPoints Score-codedownloader.exe, MyPoints Score - x64.dll, MyPoints Score.dll, MyPoints Score-buttonutil.dll, MyPoints Score-buttonutil64.dll, MyPoints Score-helper.exe, unins000.exe, Uninstall.exe. By comparison, the 3.0.6 version contains only six files that are half of what the earliest version has.
Our researchers have found that this program installs a browser extension mainly on Internet Explorer, but, depending on the version, it may also install it on Firefox and Chrome. For example, the most recent 3.0.6 version comes as an extension for Chrome. According to our research, MyPoints Score is based on the Crossrider web browser toolkit and its CodeDownloader component is set to connect to a remote API server and download additional components and code. Therefore, this application can update itself at any time and perhaps download other malicious files. Our malware researchers have found three servers to which this program is programmed to connect to which include the following: update.srvstatsdata.com (69.16.175.42:80), stats.srvstatsdata.com (176.32.99.41:80), and app-static.crossrider.com (69.16.175.10:80).
