Mongo Search

What is Mongo Search?

Mongo Search is one of those applications that don’t look dangerous at all, but they shouldn’t be allowed to remain on your system. Of course, if you added this extension to your browser willingly, that’s an entirely different story, but these programs tend to come uninvited, and if that is in your case, you shouldn’t tolerate this program.

Scroll down to the bottom of this description for the manual removal instructions and don’t forget to run a full system scan afterwards. You have to check whether you have more unwanted apps on-board because such applications tend to come in packs.test

Where does Mongo Search come from?

Like most of the potentially unwanted programs, Mongo Search has an official distribution route. The app doesn’t hide its presence, and you can easily check its official homepage at browser.mongosearch.net. What’s more, the app is also available at the Chrome Web Store. With that, it seems that this application is a decent Chrome extension, and there is nothing suspicious about it.

Nevertheless, we believe that Mongo Search, just like Tiger PDF, BoosterSearch, SearchOpedia, and many other similar applications, can also be downloaded from third-party sources. For example, there are tons of websites out there that promote such extensions via pop-ups and redirects. Those could be online video streaming sites, gaming pages, and other free content domains that contain a lot of third-party advertisements. Accidentally clicking on those ads (and sometimes – anywhere on the site) may launch a pop-up or a redirect that offers adding Mongo Search to your browser.

While, in most cases, it is possible to close the pop-up and be done with it, some users could be too distracted or confused to read everything the pop-up notification has to say, and thus, they end up accidentally adding Mongo Search to their browsers. By clicking the Add button, users also agree to give the extension the permissions it requires. So, in other words, users authorize the installation and the modifications that come with it, even if they are not 100% aware of that.

What does Mongo Search do?

If you’ve skipped the permissions this app requires, we can remind you that the extension changes your default search settings to browser.mongosearch.net. Because of that, if you are taken by surprise, it might seem that Mongo Search is a browser hijacker that modifies your settings without your permission. But again, we would like to remind you that you GIVE your permission for this to happen even if you are not fully aware of that.

So, with your search engine settings changed, the application can redirect your search queries to Google search. The interesting thing is that the search results do not seem to be modified at all. So, question is why you need Mongo Search in the first place. Can’t you just go straight to Google Search and enter your query there?

Also, even though Mongo Search doesn’t say anything about reading your browsing history, it is very likely that the application will indulge in third-party advertising to cover its development costs. So, don’t be surprised to see more commercial ads on your browser when you surf the web. Please note that you shouldn’t interact with these ads because there is no guarantee that they are safe. Albeit Mongo Search and other similar applications do not try to infect you with malware, they might be exploited by malevolent third parties for corrupt content distribution.

Finally, let’s go back to our first point: if the program is not wanted, it shouldn’t be tolerated. Thus, just because Mongo Search will not eat your system, it doesn’t mean you should keep it.

How do I remove Mongo Search?

Browser extensions can be easily removed through the browser settings menu. However, some of the cookies and other information or settings tweaked by the extension might remain even after you remove it. Hence, it would be for the best to reset your browser. After that, you can use the SpyHunter free scanner to perform a full system scan. A full system scan will tell you whether you have more unwanted apps on-board, and you will be able to remove them all automatically. Do not leave any unfamiliar or undesirable program installed.
