What is Leitkcad Ransomware?
Do you think about malware, like Leitkcad Ransomware, as soon as you turn on your computer? Hopefully, you do because you can never be too safe when it comes to malware. Unfortunately, many of our daily routines are exploited by cybercriminals, who are constantly trying to execute malicious infections. For example, malware could hide in flash drives, emails, downloaders, and even on social media platforms. The thing is that attackers need to be creative when it comes to malware distribution, and that is why you can never let your guard down. Obviously, if you take certain security steps, you can minimize your chances of facing threats greatly, and that is what we discuss in this report. We also show how to delete Leitkcad Ransomware in case it manages to slither into your Windows operating system. Note that this malware must be removed as soon as you discover it, but your files might be damaged permanently.
How does Leitkcad Ransomware work?
Your personal files are the main target of Leitkcad Ransomware. If it finds a way into your system, it immediately encrypts files and attaches the “.leitkcad” to their original names. What does this extension mean? In fact, it means nothing, and it is just a marker used to show you which files were encrypted. You can also try opening your files, and if they cannot be read anymore, that signals that they were encrypted. But why did Leitkcad Ransomware encrypt your files at all? Our Anti-Spyware-101.com research team has encountered some threats that were used for testing purposes only. Some threats were simply used to destroy files and leave their owners reeling. However, in most cases, files are encrypted as a form of hijack. Basically, your personal files are hijacked so that the attackers could make demands for a ransom, which is why the malware is known as ransomware. A file named “help-leitkcad.txt” should be dropped once the infection is done encrypting your files, and while you will need to remove this file at some point, it is perfectly safe to open it too.
The .txt file, of course, displays a text message. According to it, your files were encrypted “due to security issues.” Well, that is not a lie because if your system was secured appropriately, you would not be dealing with Leitkcad Ransomware at this time. The message informs that you need to initiate communication with the attackers via chat, and to access it, you need to follow a link. At the time of research, the link was not included in the message, which suggests that the threat is not fully developed yet. Of course, our team is looking for different samples of this malware so that we could provide you with additional information in the future. So, what would happen if you contacted the attackers behind Leitkcad Ransomware? They would make you pay a ransom in return for a password, a key, a tool, or something alike that, allegedly, would decrypt your files, but, unfortunately, cybercriminals’ promises are usually always empty. Therefore, if you pay the ransom, note that you are unlikely to get anything in return.
How to delete Leitkcad Ransomware
Ransomware is very easy to build and distribute, and it is also very easy to use this kind of malware for extortion. Unfortunately, Leitkcad Ransomware is not weak or poorly built, and it could attack your system too. If that has yet to happen, please implement trusted anti-malware software immediately. Also, create backup copies of all important personal files, and transfer the copies to safe external or virtual drives. This will ensure that you have copies just in case. If your system has already been attacked, we hope that you have copies of your personal files. If you do, focus on the removal of Leitkcad Ransomware because you will be able to replace the encrypted files afterward. The guide below lists a few locations that could potentially host the launcher file of the ransomware. However, the name and the location of this file are random, and we cannot point you to it. On the other hand, a legitimate anti-malware tool should have no trouble deleting the file automatically. Moreover, it could help you secure your system against malware in the future.
