What is Kariloo?
Kariloo is a new browser extension that has caught the attention of our malware experts at anti-spyware-101.com because having it in your browser may put your virtual security at risk. This Google Chrome extension promises you "excellent content search" by installing its own search engine as your default and changing your home page and new tab page settings, too. Due to its capabilities, we have labeled this threat as a browser hijacker. It is quite likely that you did not even install this tool knowingly. In that case it could mean that there are other malware threats on your system as well. These infections may expose you to dangerous third-party content that could cause further system security issues for you, not to mention the possibility of privacy breach and online scams. Since you cannot trust the search results this browser hijacker presents to you either, we believe that it is best for you to remove Kariloo as soon as possible to protect your PC from malicious attacks. Please read on to find out more about this malware infection and how you may be able to avoid such threats in the future.
Where does Kariloo come from?
You can install this browser extension officially but there is little chance that you would somehow find its promotional page (kariloo.com) or its Chrome web store page (chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kariloo/kolmgecmpkacfnpeagnjgeomfpmbdjpb) by searching the web for a new tool. The statistics in the web store clearly shows that not too many users have found it or found it useful or reliable enough to install it. Only around 1,400 people have thought since May, 2017 that they would give it a try. If this were a reliable and beneficial tool, this number could be reached in a day easily or even more. When you press the "Add to Chrome" button on either page, a pop-up window is displayed at the top, which contains the permissions you have to accept by installing this application. If you read this carefully, you will see that this extension adds its own search engine, which should always be alarming unless you have actually researched it and found it reputable. However, in this case your web search would only return with results that try to convince you why you should delete Kariloo as a browser hijacker.
Obviously, these are not the only platforms where this useless extension is distributed. The bad news is that we have found it spreading in freeware bundles. This also means that this browser hijacker could be only one of several malware infections and potentially unwanted programs that may be packed in such a package. Schemers can create misleading installers that could place browser setting change notifications in a deceptive manner on the installation screens or completely hide it and the rest of the pack unless the user chooses to go for the custom installation option. Most users however tend to go with the quick installation and thus let all kinds of unwanted programs and malicious programs on board, including adware programs, browser hijackers, fake alerts, Trojans, and more. You can download such freeware bundles from shady torrent and freeware pages when wanting to download free software or hacked programs, but you can also download one by clicking on corrupt third-party advertisements (banner and pop-up ads mainly) on questionable websites. Such unsafe content may also be presented to you by malware threats that are residing on your system. This is why we suggest that you scan your system with a malware scanner you can trust after you managed to delete Kariloo.
How does Kariloo work?
This Google Chrome browser extension promises you relevant search content as well as viral news feed. If you click on the icon it creates on your browser toolbar next to the menu button, a small panel pops up that contains three news pieces from viralnova.com, which is a questionable website with supposed viral news bits and, of course, a number of annoying and potentially unreliable third-party ads you should never click on to stay safe. This panel offers you a search tool at the bottom that is the same as the one set up as your default search engine, i.e., search.kariloo.com. If you use this search tool for the first time, a welcome message pops up on the search results page saying "Enjoy professional search experience." You need to press the OK button to move on, so this is quite annoying. This browser hijacker changes your home page and new tab page settings by removing the usual search box from the page and putting the cursor focus in the address bar, which is the one that uses the default search engine. This is how it pushes you to use this questionable search engine, which, by the way, redirects to a modified Yahoo search results page. Since this page could contain unsafe third-party ads and promoted links, we do not advise you to click on anything there as you could drop other infections or end up on malicious pages on new tabs. We recommend that you remove Kariloo right away.
