What is History Wipe Clean?
Every browser has a function that allows you to clear your browsing history. However, if you are not fully familiar with how your browser works, you might feel compelled to use something like History Wipe Clean on the Chrome browser. Our research team says that this application is a potentially unwanted program, and thus if you have this extension added to your browser, you should consider removing it today. It’s not that the extension is extremely dangerous, but such apps could easily expose you to potentially harmful content. To avoid that, you need to terminate the programs you do not need.
Where does History Wipe Clean come from?
We have been dealing with multiple Chrome extensions lately, so it is very likely that History Wipe Clean belongs to the same group of potentially unwanted programs as SearchProConverter, VideozSearchs, PDFConvertersSearch, and so on. All these apps tend to have official websites, and they are also available at the Chrome Web Store.
The same applies to History Wipe Clean, as well. The official website for the app is at historywipe.org, and the Chrome Web Store page is also available. Nevertheless, the application could also be distributed via third-party websites, pop-ups, and redirects. It means that if users are not careful enough, they might end up adding History Wipe Clean to their browsers accidentally.
For instance, if you receive a lot of pop-ups when you open some gaming site or a video streaming page, be sure to click those notifications without clicking ANYTHING on them. Sometimes one stray click could lead to a number of browser settings modifications that will, later on, result in an onslaught of annoying and unwanted content.
What does History Wipe Clean do?
As you can probably tell from its name, this extension is supposed to clear your web browsing history. Some of the promotional lines say that it “wipes your history clean with no extra steps and no extra hassle.” It also says that the extension “removes the history from your browser on exit. No extra setup necessary. Just install History Wipe to your browser and never worry about clearing your history again.”
Now, if you care about online privacy, this might sound like a good idea, but your browser already has this kind of function, and it’s better to clear your browser’s history directly through the settings menu, as opposed to using a third-party application. Not to mention that this application could also be quite intrusive.
When it is added to your browser, it gets permissions to read your browsing history and manage your downloads. As a result, History Wipe Clean can employ tracking cookies to collect information on your most frequently visited websites, and the search keywords that you use the most often. While this is not personally identifiable information, it could still be used to generate your online profile, and it could lead to a bout of customized advertising.
The longer History Wipe Clean remains on your system, the more personally targeted advertisements you would encounter. Let’s not forget that the extension cannot guarantee that all of the ads you see are safe. After all, it could be easily exploited by malevolent third parties.
And when it comes to the original function, it doesn’t really work. In fact, it looks like History Wipe Clean is still under development, so this app only takes up space on your browser, at the same time collecting information on your browsing history. Why keep it if it’s not useful at all?
How do I remove History Wipe Clean?
You can delete the extension if you access the Extensions menu on the Chrome browser. If you see more unfamiliar applications there, you might as well reset your browser to default. This will also clear your browsing history (finally), and all the tracking cookies and the information stored by them will be deleted, too.
If you think that there could be more dangerous programs installed, but you cannot find them, please scan your system with the SpyHunter free scanner. A full system scan will let you know which programs need to be removed from your system at once. If you cannot uninstall them via Control Panel, consider deleting them with a licensed antispyware tool.
