What is Hentai Onichan Ransomware?
Hentai Onichan Ransomware is one of those programs that leave your system in chaos and conveniently delete themselves. It is clearly a dangerous computer infection that mainly aims for your money. However, you should never pay a single cent to these criminals because the promises they make might not be even real.
To put it simply, you don’t really have to remove much if you want to get rid of Hentai Onichan Ransomware because it takes care of that. Nevertheless, after the encryption, you are left with tons of locked up files, and you somehow have to deal with that. It just shows how important file backups are.
Where does Hentai Onichan Ransomware come from?
It doesn’t look like Hentai Onichan Ransomware belongs to any of the prominent ransomware families, so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that it is a lone-wolf infection. Nevertheless, when we deal with ransomware programs, we have to understand that their danger level doesn’t change much depending on whether they come from big groups or they’re lonesome fighters. In fact, sometimes dealing with a unique (to some extent) infection is even more bothersome because it is hard to tell what it will act like in advance.
However, we can assume that Hentai Onichan Ransomware employs the usual ransomware distribution methods. That is to say, the program spreads through spam email attachments, and users download and open them accidentally.
Most of the spam usually gets filtered into our Junk folders, but some spam campaigns can be sophisticated enough to barge into the main inbox, too. Also, when spam email looks professional, users are more inclined to interact with it, download the attachments or click links. The point is that by interacting with unfamiliar files, you always face a malware infection risk. Hence, before you open files you receive from unknown parties, you should consider scanning them with a security tool.
What does Hentai Onichan Ransomware do?
Aside from being rather obscure, it is clear that this program encrypts mostly all personal files. Just like many other ransomware infections, Hentai Onichan Ransomware adds an extension to all the encrypted files. For instance, after the encryption is complete, flower.jpg will look like flower.jpg.hor. So, in a sense, this extension is like a stamp that says, hey, this file was affected by Hentai Onichan Ransomware. But it is rather redundant in a way because you can clearly tell that your files were affected, as all the file icons change at once.
So, we know that Hentai Onichan Ransomware encrypts our personal files, and it also drops a ransom note in a TXT format file into every folder that contains encrypted files. Here’s an extract from the note:
Attention! All your important files were encrypted with Hentai Onichan Ransomware!
to get your files back send 30 Bitcoins and contact us with proof of payment and your Unique Identifier Key.
We will send you a decryption tool with personal decryption password.
Further in the note, you can also find links where you can buy bitcoins and also the email you are supposed to use to contact these criminals. However, 30 Bitcoins is a terrible sum of money. It’s almost 300,000 USD, and it would mean that only big corporations could afford to pay that much for their files. And it is very unlikely that big corporations will have file backups that will save them from paying the ransom.
In fact, you should never pay anything to these criminals. Keeping copies of your files someplace else should be common practice because you can never know when a similar infection will reach you again. Not to mention that it’s always easier to restore files from a backup. Otherwise, you would have to start building your file library from scratch.
How do I Remove Hentai Onichan Ransomware?
As mentioned, this infection deletes itself once the encryption is complete. However, there might be files associated with this infection left. Hence, you would do yourself a favor if you invest in a powerful security tool that would help you scan your system in search for other potential threats. Also, learn more about ransomware distribution so you could avoid such infections in the future. Your system’s security is in your hands.
