BSS Ransomware

What is BSS Ransomware?

According to Anti-Spyware-101.com researchers, Windows users are unlikely to face BSS Ransomware. At the time of research, this infection was not spreading in the wild. Also, it appeared to be poorly designed, and it could not have served its main functions. That being said, the threat was capable of encrypting files, and there is a possibility that it is still in development, which means that it could become a big problem in the future. Hopefully, this threat will not spread; however, we need to be prepared for the worst, and that would be a full-fledged attack. If this malware invades your operating system, it might encrypt your personal files, and that is the last thing you want because decrypting files is always difficult, and almost never possible. Whether you are looking for more information just because you are intrigued, or you need to learn how to remove BSS Ransomware, we suggest that you continue reading. The report is supplemented with a guide that shows how to delete malicious files, and you also have access to the comments section in case you want to ask us any questions.test

Do you know what BSS Ransomware is?

BSS Ransomware was created using the Hidden-Tear open source code. Our research team is well familiar with it because it has been used by the creators of SnowPicnic Ransomware, EnybenyCrypt Ransomware, SymmyWare Ransomware, ShutUpAndDance Ransomware, and many other malicious infections. They are usually spread using spam emails with misleading messages and corrupted attachments, but other paths could be used as well. At the time of research, BSS Ransomware looked like a “joke,” in a sense that it was not making any claims after encryption. Also, the infection was only encrypting files in the location it was executed in (including all subfolders). Nonetheless, that does not mean that the infection is harmless. It was found that it is set to encrypt files with ".txt", ".doc", ".docx", ".xls", ".xlsx", ".ppt", ".pptx", ".odt", ".jpg", ".png", ".csv", ".sql", ".mdb", ".sln", ".php", ".asp", ".aspx", ".html", ".xml", and ".psd" extensions, which means that your documents, presentations, photos, and similar files can be encrypted. Once files are encrypted, the ".bss_locked" extension must be added. If you remove the extension, the files will not be decrypted. That will not happen even if you delete the infection.

The files are encrypted using the AES-256 algorithm, and once they are encrypted, a window entitled “Ransomware by BSS” is launched. It displays a message that asks to send “bitcoins or kebab” in return for the files. A 5-character password used for the creation of the encryption key is added as well. Besides this, there is no information that would allow victims to contact cyber criminals, pay Bitcoins, or decrypt files. This is why BSS Ransomware is considered to be a “joke” infection, and our hope is that it will not spread in the wild. Either way, whether or not the infection made a ransom payment possible, we would not recommend paying it because that would be a waste. Your files are encrypted, and there is nothing you can do about it. The only salvation is the backup. If you took care of your files, and backup copies exist, delete BSS Ransomware along with the corrupted files and then recover them from backup.
