Where does OnlineMapFinder Toolbar come from?

OnlineMapFinder Toolbar is developed by Mindspark Inc. and can be downloaded at onlinemapfinder.com. The website offers a browser plug-in for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox only, but usually OnlineMapFinder Toolbar for Google Chrome can be found at Chrome App Store.

Since this plug-in is developed by Mindspark, it uses the same engine and functions very similar to FilmFanatic Toolbar, MyScrapNook Toolbar, Utility Chest Toolbar and a great number of other applications that exhibit the same behavior. It also means, that we cannot rule out the possibility of OnlineMapFinder Toolbar being downloaded and installed together with other freeware applications.

However, take note that OnlineMapFinder Toolbar does not get installed on a computer silently, so if you have no idea how the plug-in entered your system, you most probably have skipped a step or two while installing new applications.

What does OnlineMapFinder Toolbar do?

OnlineMapFinder Toolbar gets installed on your default browser and then it collects information on your location so that it could provide you with up-to-date information on traffic conditions and help you search detailed maps. However, some users think that OnlineMapFinder Toolbar is a browser hijacker, because once the toolbar is installed, the default search engine and homepage settings get changed too.

It is true that OnlineMapFinder Toolbar comes with Ask.com as a supplement and the website can be set as your default homepage, but these changes are performed ONLY when they are authorized by the user. If you have skipped a few installation steps or have not read the installation wizard closely, you must have missed the part where you are asked whether you want to have your browser settings changed.

Naturally, these modifications are rather annoying, and you should not perform searches through Ask.com, because the search engine itself is no longer supported by the Ask Company – the search engine business was discontinued back in 2011. Thus, the question is as to why this plug-in makes use of a search engine that might be exploited by malevolent third parties.
