What is DiskPower?
DiskPower is a program that should look for duplicate files on user’s computer. According to our researchers at Anti-spyware-101.com, the application is rather primitive, and it might also work in an unwanted manner. For that reason, it was categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). The problem is that the software might not only search for duplicates, but also display suspicious pop-ups or other content with third-party ads. The advertising could appear on your screen, and since the software can auto-start with Windows, it might be hard to escape these ads. If you find it annoying, we would advise you to delete the application with our removal instructions available at the end of the article. By doing so, you might protect the system from possibly dangerous content.
Where does DiskPower come from?
The PUP was once available on its official website called diskpower.biz, but for now, the provided download button does not seem to be working. Nevertheless, there are other ways users might receive DiskPower. For instance, the software’s End User License Agreement says that the application’s official installer is powered by “Wemonetize.” It is a company that monetizes desktop programs by showing targeted ads. Apparently, users can download the PUP from Wemonetize website, although our researchers say that it could be spread on other web pages with malicious installers as well.
How does DiskPower work?
During the PUP’s installation, it creates a folder in either %PROGRAMFILES% or %PROGRAMFILES(x86)% directory. After this, DiskPower should create a couple of Registry entries in the Uninstall and Run keys. The first entry is for applications uninstallation process, but the second one is necessary for the PUP to be able to restart with Windows. That way the software launches every time you turn the computer on whether you want it or not.
The application does what it is supposed to do, but it might be not as useful as users could expect. DiskPower can find duplicate data but only if such files have the same title. It could be that the PUP checks data by its filename and size, so if the titles differ the program may not identify existing duplicates. What’s more, while the software is running it might show third-party advertising and such content could redirect the user to web pages with malicious content. The application’s creators do not review third-party web pages, so it is possible that some sites could distribute Trojans, ransomware, and other malware. If you do not want to take such risks, it would be wise to get rid of the program.
How to erase DiskPower?
Luckily, compared to other software the PUP does not create a lot of folders or Registry entries on the system. Therefore, it should not take much time to erase it manually. If that is how you choose to eliminate DiskPower, you should follow the manual removal instructions below. However, if you are an inexperienced user and the tasks seem too difficult, it might be easier to download a legitimate antimalware tool. The security tool should not be too difficult to use as all you have to do, is click the scan button and then press the deletion button once it appears.
