What is PlayThru Player?

PlayThru Player is a desktop video player with adjustable transparency setting that does not need a web browser to play YouTube videos. Although it may sound like a useful application, our malware specialists at Anti-Spyware-101.com have found certain traits that make PlayThru Player a potentially unwanted program (PUP) instead of a beneficial one. This does not mean that this PUP poses a direct threat to your computer, but it does, however, have a potential to harm your system indirectly. Where does PlayThru Player come from?

There are mainly two ways in which this PUP can reach your computer. You can directly download it from its official website, which you can find at playthruplayer.com. However, it is more likely that you install it with a freeware bundle installer. This is the more preferred method for creators of free programs and malware developers as well. That is how it is possible that when you install PlayThru Player, you let malware infections onto your computer – at least if you are not careful enough. It is important to emphasize that most users get infections this way. They simply miss one crucial step in the installation process, and that is the opt-out. Namely, you do have an opportunity to deselect additional components to be installed. It is possible that you need to choose the Custom installation, but sometimes the checkboxes are right there on the first page of the installation wizard. Unfortunately, most users tend to rush to click the Next button or the Install button. What does PlayThru Player do?

Once PlayThru Player is installed, it runs a process called playthru player.exe, which is set to autostart with Windows. Why is this a worrisome factor? Well, here is what the EULA says about the “future” capabilities of this application:

Placing display ads, banners, or coupons into web pages or displaying over parts of such web pages that advertisements would not otherwise appear on the underlying website; or Convert words on pages you view into hyperlinks that are linked to advertisements.

This simply means that by letting this PUP run in the background you might be exposed to third-party ads that could take you to unreliable websites once you click on them. That may result in more malware attacks against your computer or your being scammed in a number of ways. Deleting PlayThru Player is your way out of this.

How do I remove PlayThru Player?
