What is Coupcoup?

Coupcoup is a rather funny name for a not so amusing program. Testing has shown that it is fact an adware program that you should remove. We do not want to give the impression that this program will make your computer malfunction after infecting it, because it is only mildly malicious in the sense that it collects information about you and displays unreliable ads. Where does Coupcoup come from?

Not all adware applications are the same even though they do the same thing for the same reason, which is making money. There are different platforms on which adware programs are based. Coupcoup is based on the JustPlugIt platform, which is quite popular these days. Its creators permit their clients to create and be in full control of this adware program. However, Coupcoup is not the first unreliable adware program to be based on the JustPlugIt engine. IncreaseApp, Price Chopper, Browsing Clear, and Coolncheap have also been based on it.

There are only a handful of ways adware applications are distributed. Some are distributed via dedicated download websites. Others are bundled with legitimate and not legitimate applications, and are put up for download on free software distributing websites or on websites that feature pirated software. In the case of Coupcoup, it is known to be featured on torrent websites that have a bogus download button. This adware is known to be bundled mainly with browser hijackers from the Websearch family. Websearch.look-for-it.info, Websearch.thesearchpage.info, Websearch.searchisfun.info, and similar applications are likely to also be found on your computer, provided that it has been infected with Coupcoup.

How does Coupcoup work?

This adware program has been created for the sole purpose of displaying commercial advertisements that generate revenue for its creators. Our researchers say that Coupcoup can display pop-ups, pop-unders, coupons, banners, in-texts, and various kinds of other advertisements, since it is very versatile. The advertisements are annoying as they constantly show up whenever you visit on online shopping website. But they can show up on other websites as well, since the program collects information about you (browsing history, search queries, PC and browser settings) in order to provide customized content. So, for example, if you are interested in PC gaming then chances is that this adware will display gaming-related ads when you visit various gaming websites. It may not seem like a big problem, but the fact of the matter is the ads might be fictitious, and could infect your computer with malicious software, such as fake system utility programs and security, clandestine applications, such as keyloggers, worms, backdoors, and so on.
